Statement against Solana's meeting with Lieberman

To His Excellency
Mr. Heikki Hannikaine
Finland Head of Mission to the Palestinian Authority
President of the EU
Ramallah/ Palestine

Dear Mr. Hannikaine,

We, the signatories of this letter representing a number of Palestinian civil society organizations in the Occupied Palestinian Territories express our deepest concern and disappointment over the meeting held between Mr. Javier Solana/ EU Foreign Policy High Representative  and the leader of the Israeli Yisrael Beitenu party, Avigdor Lieberman held at the premises of the Israeli Knesset (Parliament) on October 25, 2006.

In the light of such a meeting, we, the undersigned civil society organizations feel the urgency and the need for refreshing the memory of the international community, in general and the European Union in specific that Avigdor Lieberman, the Minister of the newly created Israeli Ministry of Strategic Threats who lately has joined the Olmert’s Government calls for the  transfer of Palestinians, including the Palestinian citizens of Israel from their homelands and for the annexation a large number of Jewish settlements in the West Bank to Israel. The racist ideology Lieberman represents goes far beyond that to include public threats of bombing the Egypt’s Aswan Dam.

We, the undersigned Palestinian civil society organizations express our strong condemnation of such a meeting, particularly at this time when the European Union continues to join the political and diplomatic siege imposed on the democratically elected Palestinian Government, in order to force it out of office completely.

It is also worth reminding that in 2000, the EU countries imposed diplomatic sanctions on one of the member states, Austria, after the right wing freedom Party joined the government.

We believe that the acceptance of the EU to hold a meeting with such an Israeli political figure, carrier of fascist tendencies, imposes a question mark on the biased, double standard EC policies, particularly when it comes to the Israeli/ Palestinian conflict.

We look forward that the EU considers playing a more objective and constructive political role, particularly as the Palestinians continue to face alone the international irresponsible manner represented in imposing political and economic aid sanctions intended at violating the Palestinian political will and freedom, and imposing of international political agendas.

Yours sincerely,

Coalition for Jerusalem (60 civil society organizations), Palestinian Network of NGOs (90 NGOs), Union of Charitable Societies/Jerusalem (120 organizations), Coalitions of Jerusalem Human Rights‘ Organizations (16 organizations), Grassroots Campaign Against the Wall (12 civil society organizations and 54 popular committees).

C.c. Mr. Javier Solana – High Representative for the EU Foreign and Security Policy.
